it’s time to clock in!
BambooHR wanted to offer a free kiosk app that our customers paying for the the time tracking feature to have access to. While we offered partnerships with other companies for physical time tracking kiosks that integrated to our system, it was time BambooHR developed one of their own. Introducing, the BambooHR Clock In Kiosk

hackathon research
We started with a hackathon and prepared ahead of time as a team. I prepared a competitive analysis of other competitors in the field, both functionality and UX/UI. Meanwhile our developers explored what would be possible with our current code base.
brainstorming
During the hackathon we discussed who are core users are, brainstormed concepts, I wireframed idea’s and developers quick mocked concepts we discussed together as a team.
We left with a clearer understand of what tools we wanted to test and what user flows needed to be determined.
architecture
Post hackathon I had a clear direction on what was possible for the flow and who are users were. I began with constructing user flows and exploring the architecture of the app.
informed design explorations
We developed some more hi-fidelity wireframes to test with our time tracking customers and learned some key insights on what they’re looking for:
Admins want access in the mobile app to see who’s clocked in for the day outside of the kiosk
Admins need the ability to create specific project time tracking in the kiosk, in the mobile app or desktop product
Employees need to be able to track time against projects they’re assigned
Employees need to be able to verify with more than just a code that they’ve clocked in or out for the day
the clock in kiosk final deliverable
The final deliverable included the feedback we recieved in testing. First and foremost, Admin’s wanted a simple, guided login experience with onboarding
app onboarding
using the app
We launched the beta app to test internally that scans the employees face before they enter their code so a manager can be kept aware of who’s in for the day. Project planning and tracking has become an integral part of the tool, and is emphasized for quick entry.
design systems thinking
While this new tablet app heavily references the new mobile app and desktop design system, it was brand new for the brand. With delivery of the app, I worked with our engineering team on ensuring they had all the deliverables they needed to make handoff smooth. Here are some examples of the of the design system and component library.
