mobile app refresh

I joined BambooHR at the tail-end of a UI Brand System Refresh. I assisted with completing some final components and systems, and my first large task at BambooHR was to work on the refresh of the mobile app.

the problem

With the desktop product getting a full face-lift, it was time to take a look at how the mobile app could be improved. We knew from feedback collected in Pendo, that several area’s of the app were not being utilized. And with the desktop product improvements, there was an opportunity to improve mobile app engagement.

  • Add recently added desktop tooling to the app

  • Investigate and research with current customers to understand their pain points

  • Remodel the navigation to more closely reflect what users want and need to use the mobile experience more often.

the opportunity

meet the user

Your typical BambooHR mobile user is on the go. They want to easily check in with updates from their boss, clock in/out of shifts, submit time off, and all around personalize the app to the tools they need.

We met with these user’s in 1-on-1 interviews to understand their pain points to validate the pendo click data we had collected.

card sorting

We ran some additional testing with current BambooHR users. We sent out an exercise through Maze to test what both Admins want their employees to have access to, and what employees want easy access to through the app.

wireframing

After the data we collected one what users want and what they’re clicking, I began concepting idea’s we could use to reorganize the app navigation structure to encourage higher engagement. All while keeping in mind our new design brand system.

design explorations

Now the fun part, I explored design directions we could take given our feedback and wireframes. We ran an A/B test with the user’s we started with to get their perspective. It was crucial in order for us to feel confident moving forward confidently with a Beta version to launch.

testing insights

  • They loved the easy access to BambooHR AI for quicker answers

  • Users wanted widget control to choose they’re favorite tools

  • User’s couldn’t find tools as easily ironically with the “quick tool access”

  • Widgets should be clear on what’s clickable and what’s not

  • Users liked how clear, clean and guiding the newer designs felt in comparison to today’s experience.
