To employ and pay employees in a certain location, you need to create an entity. This can take months and is very expensive.

Once you have the entity created, there are ever-changing employment laws and compliance requirements you need to manage. Remote has had over 100 schema changes to their Employment Contracts in the last few months due to compliance updates.

You have to manage payroll in multiple systems.

You have to understand the culture nuances of your workforce per country. This includes holidays, time off, benefits, pay.

research
We started with interviewing our Remote Partners to understand the entire end to end experience. We conducted 1:1 interviews, group interviews, and emailed surveys with current integration users and prospective customers.
The feedback offered so many directions we could take. Our strategic approach was to identify the core MVP (creating global employees in BHR), and how the additional tools could seamlessly build on top of that over time
architecture
We conducted internal interviews with each team at BHR. This was intensive but critical to know every corner of the product this experience could integrate without breaking any architecture. We also knew we’d be using Remote’s Software Development Kit (SDK), so it would be critical to find the right tools in BHR to match.
From there I created user flows from our testing feedback for the two users we knew will have access:

This has been the meat of the project. Understanding where the integration needs to be embedded, quick mocking these and presenting to other teams in the organization and seeking approval of any updates needed in each area. We started with the wireframes critical to the MVP:

We tested the wireframes with prospective customers, and current integration users we connected with during our earlier research. The feedback informed us that users want clear details of what to expect, easy new employee creation, and access to important tooling like time off.

product discovery
I tailored the “marketing” page to learning about the tools this will unlock for a company based on user feedback and input from our Sales team. User’s could explore a preview of tools like the country selector or cost calculator (embedded tool from Remote) to see what to expect, and more!
account registration
After a sales conversation, users click "Get Started" and register their Remote account directly inside BambooHR — no new tab required.
The page transforms post-activation — a friendly empty state with clear paths to add a first hire or run a cost estimate.
Once employees are added, the page becomes a live dashboard — name, location, job title, and EOR contract status at a glance.
creating global employees
Users now have the ability to hire full time employees or contractors through Remote’s services anywhere in the world, all in their HRIS, BambooHR.
Now admins can track the onboarding process requirements for both Remote and BambooHR in one place.
testing refinements
We tested how user’s felt after creating their account and got very useful feedback on exactly what user’s love and hate about using the integration. We catered a brand new onboarding experience for new users.
We now walk users through their new tools, how to setup their account, and included Pendo assisted flows for their first time using the integration.

We’re continuing to iterate and provide tooling through the integration like a more robust cost calculator to make planning ahead for hiring even easier.
